Work assignments
This position is divided into two primary responsibilities:
• Instrumentation and User Support at MAXPEEM (approx. 50%):
• Take a key role in the development, maintenance, and optimization of the advanced spectromicroscopy systems at the MAXPEEM beamline.
• Provide high-level experimental support and technical guidance to international visiting researchers (beamtime users).
• Research on Novel 2D Materials (approx. 50%):
The research will focus on two cutting-edge projects:
• Project 1: The synthesis and characterization of novel metallenes and derivatives. This involves using cutting-edge microscopy and spectroscopy to investigate their unique electronic, structural, and plasmonic properties.
• Project 2: Exploring the synthesis of metallene layers sandwiched between SiC and graphene. This project is designed to maximize the productivity of the MAXPEEM equipment.
As postdoc, you will principally carry out research. A certain amount of teaching may be part of your duties, up to a maximum of 20% of working hours.
Qualifications
To be qualified to take employment as postdoc, you must have been awarded a doctoral degree or have a foreign degree that is deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree. This degree must have been awarded at the latest by the point at which LiU makes its decision to employ you.
It is considered advantageous if your doctoral degree is no older than three years at application deadline for this job. If there are special reasons for having an older doctoral degree – such as taking statutory leave – then these may be taken into consideration.
We are looking for someone with a doctoral degree in Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field.
Specific entry requirements include:
• Demonstrated hands-on experience with ultra-high vacuum (UHV) systems and surface science characterization techniques (e.g., XPS, UPS, LEED, SEM).
• A strong research background in 2D materials synthesis or characterization.
• Proficiency in English is mandatory.
The following qualifications are highly advantageous:
• Direct experience with synchrotron-based techniques, especially Photoemission Electron Microscopy (PEEM).
• Experience in the synthesis of novel 2D materials (e.g., thin-film deposition by PVD and CVD).
• Proven programming skills (e.g., Python) for instrument control and data analysis.
You are a highly motivated and independent researcher with a strong problem-solving aptitude and a proactive approach to research challenges. You are also a team player with excellent communication and collaboration skills, capable of working effectively within a multidisciplinary research environment.
The workplace
The successful candidate will be formally employed by Linköping University (LiU) but will be primarily stationed at MAXPEEM of the MAX IV Laboratory in Lund, Sweden, a world-leading synchrotron facility. As a member of the Materials Design Division at LiU, the postdoc will be fully integrated into the university's research environment, including participation in regular group meetings and events.
